WTF??…Why Cigars???

cav12It has just been in the last full year and a half, that I have discovered a very not-so-accepted form of enjoyment; enjoying a “good” cigar. I mean a premium “good” stogey. I know just enough about good cigars to not know much at all. But I do know what I enjoy, not sure why I enjoy it as much as I do, but enjoy I do. I have smoked very little in my life. I will admit to experimenting with the drug-smoke of choice back when I was a little too ignorant to what I was doing. At the time, I had no goals or redeeming values, so getting high was just a meager past-time of semi enjoyment. The more responsibility you may assume the less you may venture out experimenting with drugs. Its been a long time ago and for the most part, I learned a lot of what I should not be doing to my body. But smoking ANYTHING can cause cancer…right?

cao11I have never smoked a commercial cigarette in my life.  I think they are foul; (I know..lots of people think cigars are too..), very addictive, and to be honest the most potent killer, short of a hand gun humans deal with. You are addicted by inhaling the smoke, thus getting your nicotine “high”; not too much unlike a similar “high” one gets from marijuana.  I have indulged in smoking a pipe occasionally, and though I like the pipe experience, I never gave a second thought that I would ever fancy a good cigar. But over two years ago a friend of mine who I help with his website, asked me if he could pay me for the work I was doing in some form of gifts instead of money. I said sure, never wanting to turn down a gift and one day I received a box from UPS. It had some coffee from Boca Java, and an assortment of cigars; and some very deep instruction on how to keep the cigars in an environment that would assure them to be tasty for a long time. I thought to myself, how the hell is a cigar ever to be considered “tasty”? Was I ever in for a surprise.

cao2In the ensuing months, I learned that cigars have  to be seasoned and kept in a humidor with a constant humidity of 65%-70%. It really is not that hard of a thing to do, and I will not go into the humidifying devices they have on the market, but the fact is, they work. And you find out really fast why a cigar is tasty; its kept at the right temperature and the right humidity. If  not, they call them “Dog Rockets”; and a dog rocket is nothing short of what a dog might leave you on your home lawn.

Another thing that totally fascinates me about sitting down to enjoy a cigar is the voyage it may take you. Let me say thins at this time though, you do NOT inhale cigar smoke, you inhale it and it will knock you for a ride, take the enjoyment out of it and you will not enjoy the differences it give you during the smoke. If you can find the place, and the time to relax and smoke a good premium cigar, you will find yourself going through some major changes as you smoke the cigar from end to end. The taste will change, as will the intensity, as will the pure satisfaction you will get. And you never have to inhale a thing. cao3The enjoyment is the “hook” for me. I cant explain it anymore than it gives me quality time to think, or enjoy a book, or enjoy just being outside; not allowed to smoke indoors almost anywhere anymore. And often it’s done alone because of the second hand smoke from a cigar. It is foul to many and the last thing I would do would infringe on others…..up to a point!!

Regardless of what anybody says, you are introducing a foreign substance into your body, and the implications of that should be well thought out before you start truly enjoying cigars.  You should start to smoke cigars because you want to learn about the differences in various cigars.  Because you want to talk about these differences, and because you want to do something that relaxes you and makes you feel good inside.  I know this sounds silly, but coming home from a long day at work, enjoying the drink of your choice, lighting up a nice cigar, sitting on the porch with the summer breeze in your face, and just relaxing, is one of the most enjoyable experiences you can imagine.  So in short; you should start smoking cigars because you feel it is right for you and it is what you want to do.  Cigar smoking is a hobby, cigarette smoking is an addiction.

I know of the dangers of smoking a cigar. Too much of a good thing can be bad for you in many instances. But I will be 59 in three months from this writing. And when you’re almost 59 and you find something that make you feel good sort of happy with a smile, then as for me I will do it when I can, not offend anyone if at all possible, and do it until I don’t want to anymore or I die; which ever may come first.

And with that being said, I will sit back and enjoy a “Perdomo Lot-23 Maduro Robusto”..out in the snow!!!
